Food & Beverage Manufacturing and Wholesale Insurance

Insurance for Australian food and beverage manufacturers, processors, importers and wholesalers, including property, business interruption, products liability, recall and transit considerations.

Food and beverage manufacturing and wholesale

Insurance for food and beverage manufacturers, processors, importers and wholesalers.

Food production and distribution businesses can combine valuable plant and stock, refrigeration, product liability, contamination, transport and supply-chain exposures. Mercantile helps Australian food businesses review commercial insurance around their operations, products, premises and distribution arrangements.

Food industry insurance

Insurance shaped around how food and beverages move through your business.

Food and beverage manufacturers and wholesalers operate across activities such as processing ingredients, preparing or preserving food, blending or producing beverages, packaging, bottling, canning, importing, cold storage, distribution, private-label supply and wholesale trading. Each activity can change the property, liability, stock and interruption risks insurers need to assess.

Our role is to help explain the business to insurers, review available insurance terms and identify where the program should reflect the firm’s actual operations. Cover, limits and exclusions depend on underwriting, policy wording and the information provided. No policy automatically covers every form of contamination, spoilage, recall, interruption or product-related loss.

Businesses and operations we can discuss

  • Food and beverage manufacturers, processors, bottlers, canners and packers
  • Bakeries, commercial kitchens and prepared-food producers
  • Dairy, meat, seafood, produce and ingredient businesses
  • Food importers, exporters, wholesalers and distributors
  • Cold-storage and temperature-controlled storage operators
  • Businesses supplying food products under their own or a customer’s brand
  • Businesses using contract manufacturers, co-packers or third-party logistics providers
  • Food businesses with multiple production, storage or distribution locations

Beverage businesses may include breweries, distilleries, wineries, soft-drink and juice producers, water bottlers, coffee or tea manufacturers, and beverage importers and wholesalers. Insurers may assess the production process, ingredients, alcohol content where relevant, packaging, storage, refrigeration, distribution and sales territories. The appropriate insurance structure depends on what the business does itself, what is outsourced, where products are made or stored, and where goods are sold or transported.

Property, plant and business interruption

Food premises may contain production lines, ovens, fryers, boilers, refrigeration systems, cool rooms, freezers, packaging equipment, stock and specialist fit-outs. A property review may consider the values insured, the construction and fire protection of each site, and how a loss at one location could affect the wider operation.

Property and business interruption insurance can be considered together. For an interruption review, important details may include the selected basis of cover, the indemnity period, dependencies on key suppliers or customers, seasonal trading patterns and the time required to repair or replace specialist machinery. Business interruption cover is subject to the insured events, definitions, limits, conditions and exclusions in the policy.

Refrigeration and temperature-sensitive stock need particular attention. Businesses should check how their policy treats breakdown, temperature change, deterioration of stock, utility interruption and other causes of loss. These exposures may be subject to specific conditions, sublimits, exclusions or separate cover requirements.

Public and products liability

Food manufacturers, importers and wholesalers may be asked to provide evidence of public and products liability insurance to customers, landlords, retailers or other trading partners. A review should consider the declared activities, products, turnover, territories, limits and applicable policy terms.

Products liability is not a substitute for product quality systems or product compliance processes. Insurance response depends on the wording and circumstances of a claim, including the policy’s definitions and exclusions. Imported products, private-label goods, contract manufacturing and sales into overseas markets should be disclosed accurately for insurer consideration.

Product recall and contamination exposures

A product recall or contamination event can create costs such as investigating affected stock, communicating with customers, withdrawing or replacing products, disposal, testing and interruption to trading. These costs are not necessarily covered by a standard public and products liability policy. Specialist product recall or contamination insurance may be available for some businesses, subject to underwriting, terms, limits, exclusions and any waiting periods or retention.

A placement discussion should distinguish between third-party injury or property damage allegations and the costs of withdrawing or recalling a product where no injury or damage has occurred. Businesses should provide insurers with relevant product categories, manufacturing and sourcing arrangements, quality controls, recall procedures, sales volumes and distribution territories.

Stock, transit and supply-chain exposures

Food stock may be held at the insured’s premises, in third-party cold stores, in transit, or at a customer or distributor location. A review can consider stock values, ownership and responsibility for goods, peak seasonal accumulations, domestic and overseas transit, temperature controls and the insurance arrangements of logistics providers.

Marine cargo or transit cover may be relevant to imported ingredients, finished goods and domestic distribution. The scope of cover depends on the insured interest, journey, conveyance, packaging, temperature requirements and policy wording. Businesses should not assume that a carrier’s liability or a customer’s insurance will protect their own financial interest in goods.

Interruption can also arise from a key supplier, processor, storage provider or customer. Whether an extension for a dependent property or supply-chain interruption is available, and how it responds, must be checked against the policy wording and schedule.

Other covers to consider

Depending on the operation, an insurance review may also include:

  • Machinery breakdown: production and refrigeration equipment, where available and accepted by insurers.
  • Motor fleet: business vehicles and delivery fleets, with vehicle use and driver arrangements declared.
  • Cyber insurance: selected cyber incidents and response costs, subject to policy terms and security requirements.
  • Management liability: certain management, employment and statutory liability exposures for eligible businesses.
  • Workers compensation: statutory arrangements applying to the business’s employees in each relevant jurisdiction.
  • Trade credit: protection against certain eligible customer non-payment risks, subject to insurer acceptance and policy terms.

These covers do not all sit within one policy, and some may not be appropriate for a particular business.

What insurers may ask about

A clear submission gives insurers a better picture of the business. Information commonly requested includes:

  • Products made, processed, packed, imported, stored or distributed
  • Turnover by activity, product category, customer type and sales territory
  • Premises addresses, construction, occupancy, protection and risk improvements
  • Building, contents, plant, machinery, stock and business interruption values
  • Refrigeration systems, temperature monitoring, alarms and backup arrangements
  • Cooking, heating, extraction, hot-work and fire-protection arrangements
  • Product testing, traceability, supplier checks and recall procedures
  • Contract manufacturers, co-packers, third-party logistics and cold-storage providers
  • Domestic and overseas distribution, including export destinations
  • Claims, losses, known circumstances and current insurance terms

Accurate and complete information matters at quotation, renewal and when circumstances change. Notify the insurer or broker promptly if a claim or circumstance may need to be reported under a policy.

Food manufacturing and wholesale insurance review

When reviewing a food business insurance program, we can consider the relationship between property, business interruption, machinery, stock, liability and transit cover. We can also review schedules, limits, deductibles, sublimits, key exclusions and insurer requirements, and explain material differences between available terms.

For a new quotation or renewal review, prepare a summary of products and operations, annual turnover, locations, property and stock values, distribution territories, claims history and current policy schedule. We can then identify the further information insurers may need.

Questions about food business insurance

Does public and products liability cover the cost of a product recall?

Not necessarily. Liability insurance and product recall cover address different exposures. Recall costs may require specialist cover and are subject to the wording, limits, exclusions and insurer acceptance.

Are refrigerated stock and temperature changes automatically insured?

No. Check the policy for the insured causes of loss, any refrigeration or deterioration extensions, sublimits, conditions and exclusions that apply to stock.

Can a policy cover imported food products or private-label products?

Insurers may consider these activities, but the products, sourcing, manufacturing arrangements, territories and turnover should be disclosed accurately. The policy wording and insurer acceptance determine the cover available.

What information should a food or beverage wholesaler provide for an insurance review?

Useful information includes the product range, turnover, locations, stock values, storage and refrigeration arrangements, distribution methods, export destinations, customer and supplier dependencies, current insurance and claims history.
